Must-Have Clothing Pieces for a Capsule Wardrobe

Introduction:
A capsule wardrobe is essentially a basic wardrobe: a selection of must-have pieces that are easy to mix and match. Here are the essential items that form the foundation of a functional and stylish capsule wardrobe.

1. The Perfect Jeans
A good pair of jeans is essential in everyone’s wardrobe. We’re talking about a classic, neutral pair that can be worn both casually and dressed up.
Tip: Choose jeans in a neutral color with straight legs or a slim fit, depending on what makes you feel most comfortable. Keep the design simple, without too many details.

2. The T-Shirt
It’s best to go for a plain white, black, or grey T-shirt. You don’t need all three if you feel that one of these colors doesn’t suit you, but a white T-shirt is definitely a must-have. This piece can be paired with anything: a skirt, pants, shorts, or as a layering piece during colder months.
Tip: Invest in a T-shirt made of sturdy cotton that isn’t see-through and stays in good condition for a long time.

3. A Classic Blazer
A well-fitted blazer can be worn for almost any occasion, from daytime at work to evening dinners.
Tip: Choose a basic color like black, grey, white, or beige so that it matches with almost everything.

4. A White Shirt
Another essential item in your wardrobe that always looks good. It can be worn casually with the sleeves rolled up or formally with tailored pants or a skirt.
Tip: Make sure it’s made of breathable fabric, such as cotton. Wash it regularly with a product like Vanish to keep it bright white.

5. The Little Black Dress
A black dress is timeless and has been a wardrobe staple for years. It can be dressed up or down depending on how you style it.
Tip: Choose a dress that flatters your figure and accentuates it in all the right ways, but make sure it’s not too revealing. Avoid too many details or extras—less is more—so you can wear the dress on multiple occasions.

6. A Leather Jacket
Some might not see this as a wardrobe essential, but a leather jacket is, like a blazer, a very versatile item. If you keep the design simple, it can be worn with many different looks, whether casual, chic, or edgy.
Tip: If possible, invest in real leather; it will last for years. High-quality faux leather is also a good option. Opt for a timeless color like black or brown for easier styling.

7. A Black Trousers
Stylish, timeless, and very easy to combine for both casual and classic looks.
Tip: Make sure the trousers fit comfortably and are made of a fabric that doesn’t wrinkle easily.

8. A Knitted Cardigan, Hoodie, or Sweater
Depending on your style, this is a basic item that helps you stay warm on colder days or evenings, and it’s perfect for layering during transitional seasons.
Tip: Choose a warm, comfortable fabric that feels good on your skin and doesn’t make you sweat too much.

9. Boots or Sneakers
Both can be part of your basic wardrobe, but a sturdy pair of sneakers is ideal for warmer seasons and even during cooler days. Many women also love ankle boots or taller boots.
Tip: Go for white or black sneakers and brown or black boots to ensure maximum versatility in your wardrobe.

The Best Fabrics for Every Season – Fall Edition

Fall is the first season after summer when temperatures start to drop, the leaves change color, and our wardrobe gets a much-needed update. While summer wardrobes are made up of light, airy fabrics, fall comes with its own unique fabric needs. It’s the perfect season for layering, with the right fabrics to keep you warm and stylish.

In this blog, we’ll take a look at the best fabrics for the fall season.

1. Wool: The Timeless Classic

Wool is, without a doubt, one of the most popular fabrics for fall. Naturally warm, breathable, and moisture-resistant, wool is ideal for cold days. Think wool sweaters, scarves, and coats to keep you cozy on crisp fall days.

  • Properties: Warm, insulating, breathable
  • When to wear it? Wool is perfect for colder fall days and layered outfits. Ideal for a day at the park or a walk outside.
  • Styling tips: Pair a thick wool sweater over a dress or stylish pants. A wool scarf can complete an otherwise simple outfit.

2. Cotton: Perfect for Layering

Cotton is the second most popular fabric after wool. Though it’s less warm, it’s an excellent choice for layering and serves well as a base layer. A cotton blouse or T-shirt can easily be worn underneath other layers.

  • Properties: Breathable, soft, lightweight
  • When to wear it? Ideal for days when temperatures fluctuate, allowing you to add or remove layers.
  • Styling tips: Combine a cotton T-shirt under your wool sweater or blazer. Or opt for a cotton shirt in fall colors like burgundy, army green, or mustard yellow.

3. Flannel: Warm and Comfortable

Flannel, made from cotton or wool, is known for its soft, warm qualities. Flannel shirts are iconic for fall and offer both style and comfort.

  • Properties: Warm, soft, lightly brushed surface
  • When to wear it? Flannel is perfect for chilly fall days when you need that extra warmth but don’t want to wear a heavy coat just yet.
  • Styling tips: A flannel shirt over a T-shirt creates a casual look, or button it up with a leather vest for a more rugged style.

4. Corduroy: Retro and Chic

Corduroy, with its textured warmth, is a classic fabric that fits perfectly into fall thanks to its sturdy yet soft quality.

  • Properties: Soft, durable, insulating
  • When to wear it? Perfect for pants, skirts, and jackets, corduroy keeps you warm while looking refined.
  • Styling tips: Corduroy pants in earthy tones like brown, moss green, or rust orange are ideal fall colors. Pair them with a light sweater or blouse for a comfortable, retro-inspired outfit.

5. Cashmere: Luxury and Softness

Cashmere is known for being a luxurious fabric thanks to its extreme softness and insulating properties. It’s more expensive than wool but offers a refined look and feels wonderful on the skin.

  • Properties: Very soft, lightweight, warm
  • When to wear it? Cashmere sweaters are perfect for formal or casual occasions during cooler fall days.
  • Styling tips: A cashmere sweater in a neutral color can be elegantly paired with a wool skirt or corduroy pants. It also layers beautifully under a trench coat or leather jacket.

6. Leather and Suede: Timeless and Stylish

Leather and suede are popular outer layers for fall. Leather jackets offer protection against the wind and cold, while suede has a softer, more luxurious look.

  • Properties: Durable, windproof (leather), soft texture (suede)
  • When to wear it? Perfect for outdoor fall activities like a nature walk or a city stroll.
  • Styling tips: A leather jacket over a wool sweater provides both warmth and style. Suede boots or jackets are ideal for dry fall days and add a touch of sophistication to your look.

Conclusion:

Fall offers a wide range of fabrics that help you stay warm, comfortable, and stylish. From the classic warmth of wool and flannel to the luxury of cashmere and the timeless charm of corduroy, each fabric has its own unique benefits. By choosing your fabrics wisely and learning how to combine them, you can make the most of the season no matter the weather.

Until next time, stay stylish!

Modetrends herfst/winter 2024

Introduction: The short Belgian summer is coming to an end. It’s time to store away the very summery clothing pieces, but don’t worry: this year’s spring and summer trends are beautifully transitioning into fall and winter. In this blog post, I’ll share the must-have trends for the upcoming seasons.

The Wider, the Better: We’re still massively embracing wider clothing, especially the wide blazer. The oversized trend is very versatile and can be worn on almost any occasion. Whether you’re heading to a party or going to work, an oversized blazer keeps you stylish and comfortable. Wide skirts are also making a big statement.

The Combination of Warm Fabrics: Opt for sustainable items like 100% cashmere or wool for your fall and winter outfits. These materials might be a bit pricier (check the label for the fabric description), but with proper care, they can last for years. Additionally, you can easily combine these materials for a luxurious look. Layering will definitely make a strong comeback this season.

The Smoking: For those who have worn suits in previous seasons, the rise of the smoking jacket is great news. The smoking jacket looks slightly more sophisticated, often fits more closely, and is typically worn with a white shirt or blouse. It accentuates the female form in a very professional and elegant way. Think of materials like velvet. This fabric fits well with the trend of cinched waists, providing more shape to your silhouette.

Faux Fur: This remains a sensitive fashion trend for some, especially when it involves real fur. Fortunately, there is also faux fur. Furry coats or dresses with feathers are one of the fall and winter trends and will definitely keep you warm during the colder months. And don’t worry, the classic coat is also very much in style.

Business Suits: As we saw in the spring and summer, we love a business look. In the fall and winter, this look is often completed with ties. So ladies, a nice suit finished with a tie or perhaps just wide jeans, since wide clothing remains fashionable. As you can see, wide and large silhouettes are in.

Tough Boots: Last year, we saw tough boots make a comeback alongside the pointy models. This season, non-pointy, rugged boots remain in style. Biker boots, in particular, are still very popular. These boots add an edgy touch to any outfit and are perfect for the colder months.

Conclusion: Trends often continue but are adjusted with new materials or by adding and changing elements. Trends are meant to be wearable for everyone, from the affluent to the middle class, and especially without specific logos. So, find the trends that suit you and create your own stylish look for fall and winter 2024.

Until next time, stay stylish and enjoy the fashion trends!

Buy Less, Choose Well, Make It Last

“Buy less, choose well, make it last” – one of the most used quotes in the fashion industry. Yet, if we’re all honest with ourselves, not everyone follows this rule. And I certainly won’t pretend that as a stylist, I always make the right choices either. What some people might forget is that I am often dependent on my clients. But what is sustainable fashion, really?

The Rise of Sustainable Fashion

More and more people today are focusing on sustainability, and this topic has become increasingly prevalent in the fashion world. There are now numerous regulations that producers must adhere to, though not everyone follows these rules or some try to circumvent them. It’s not always easy. Many of us already have sustainable pieces in our wardrobes—items that last the longest and are made from high-quality materials. These may not always be the latest trends, but as we know, trends often return, and we also don’t have endless space in our closets.

In my own wardrobe, I think of my turtleneck sweaters. They have lasted for years, and I have them in various colors. Not always following every trend and first diving into our own closets is part of sustainable fashion. Just like buying locally and not always ordering from abroad (read: China). Choosing sustainable materials like bamboo, cotton, and linen is also crucial. Unfortunately, making a single piece of clothing takes a lot of time and money, and there is more to it than just designing.

The Impact of Fashion on the Economy

The fashion industry significantly impacts the entire economic industry, so it’s good that we’re trying to become more conscious of it. A lot of information can be found on the clothing label, such as the material composition and care instructions, which play a crucial role in the longevity of your garment (though this isn’t mandatory). For those who follow a vegan lifestyle, labels usually indicate whether animal products were used, such as leather and fur.

Responsibility on Both Sides

Sustainability requires effort from both producers and consumers. Imagine if we were more conscious of our purchases, avoiding impulsive buys and steering clear of fast fashion, especially from China. This would result in much less being produced than is currently the case. It’s a vicious cycle that requires change from both ends.

Conclusion

We are making steps in the right direction, but as with many issues, not everyone is convinced or aware yet. Personally, I try to avoid bad purchases and don’t follow every trend. I aim for sustainability, and in my job, I consciously try to avoid certain practices, such as ordering fast fashion from abroad. Sometimes, it’s not possible due to client demands, budgets, and time constraints, but I hope that with the actions we take, we can strive for better together and become more conscious overall.

I sometimes lend or borrow clothes among friends—every little bit helps. Until next time, stay stylish!

Back-to-School Fashion Trends

Introduction

For some of us, August is the month of preparing for a new school year. Buying new school bags, uniforms, school clothes, and transitioning from summer to autumn attire are all on the agenda. In this blog post, I’ll share some great brands and tips to make the back-to-school period stylish and stress-free. As a stylist, I have the advantage of attending press days. There, I discovered several brands at Marnix & Dally, such as Jeune Premier for school bags, Chlues kidswear for clothing, and Mepal for lunch boxes.

School Bags

I immediately loved the school bags from Jeune Premier and will definitely get one for my godchildren when they are old enough. They offer a wide variety of backpacks in different sizes and colors, suitable for boys, girls, and even unisex options. The prints are very original as well. These bags are made by parents for their children and others. An absolute must-have!

New Outfits

At the press days at Marnix & Dally, I also discovered the new collection from Chlues kidswear. Their clothing is fantastic because it grows with the child, which is perfect since kids grow so quickly. Their clothes are not only adjustable but also very flattering. The quality of the fabric is durable and stylish, perfect for both boys and girls who love to play at school. Highly recommended!

Lunch Boxes

Lunch boxes are also essential. For this, you can rely on Mepal. They have lunch boxes that are perfect for taking to school, to work, or for a Wednesday afternoon picnic. They come in fun colors, various shapes, and prints. Practical and stylish!

Conclusion

I don’t have children myself, but I am a big fan of these brands. They offer wonderful colors, original prints, and durable materials. Perfect for the start of the new school year or the first school day. I wouldn’t wait too long to get your hands on these items. This way, you can be sure to snag the coolest trends and avoid having to settle for something less exciting.

Shoe Trends Summer 2024:

Step into Style and Comfort

Sometimes I wonder where my shoe phase went. As a student, I loved collecting shoes—not just the trends of the moment, but also ones I simply found beautiful. With a large collection, my shoes generally stayed in style. Even though my shoe closet is a bit less full now, I still keep a close eye on current shoe trends. I’d love to share these trends with you in this blog.

Sneakers: Timeless Favorites

Sneakers are a constant presence on the streets. The current trend focuses on classic models like Adidas Sambas and Adidas Campus. These come in various colors and are also available from other brands like New Balance. Sneakers are easy to pair with wide-legged trousers, midi or maxi skirts, and fit perfectly with the crochet trend and under a white dress. These versatile shoes align seamlessly with this summer’s outfit trends.

Kitten Heels: Elegant Comfort

Kitten heels, a beloved trend from the past, are making a comeback. You can see them as ballerinas with a small, short heel and a pointed finish. These shoes are trendy, elegant, and still very comfortable. Whether you wear them with a casual outfit or a chic ensemble, kitten heels always add a touch of sophistication.

Colors: Red and Silver

Red and silver are very popular this summer, both in pumps, kitten heels, and sneakers. While these colors might be considered bold, they are surprisingly easy to combine with current clothing trends. They add a striking and fashionable touch to any outfit.

Comfortable Sandals

Comfortable sandals remain indispensable every summer, especially for a day at the beach. They are often more comfortable than flip-flops because they secure well at the heel and have multiple straps. The most popular sandals right now are Teva sandals and Dr. Martens sandals, perfect for a day out or a relaxed walk.

Leather Ankle Boots

Leather ankle boots, as we saw last year and earlier this year, are making a strong comeback. Especially cowboy boots and silver-colored ankle boots are very in-demand. These boots are a stylish addition to your summer wardrobe and can be worn both casually and chic.

Open Toes

Open-toed shoes are also back this summer. This can be seen in sandals, long boots with a small heel, and other shoe styles. This trend is perfect for transitioning from summer to fall and lets you show off your beautiful pedicure.

Conclusion

This summer’s shoe trends are versatile and easy to combine with the season’s outfit trends. Whether you choose a white dress, the transparent trend, casual business looks, or a polo, there’s always a shoe that fits perfectly. Comfort and style go hand in hand, allowing you to look fashionable and feel comfortable at the same time.

High Summer: The Time of Year to Be Comfortable and Stylish

Introduction:

Let’s start by painting a picture of what high summer actually means. This is the period when temperatures reach their peak, typically between mid-July and mid-August. During these weeks, trends change, and while some people are more aware of this than others, there’s something new for everyone to discover.

Color Choice: Light and Airy Shades

In high summer, we see a shift towards lighter colors in our wardrobes. Why? Because these shades absorb less sunlight and keep you cooler. Think of wearing white, pastels, and beige. These colors are not only practical but also perfect for creating a summery and fresh look.

Material Choice: Breathable and Sustainable

During this period, we often opt for materials that are breathable and wick away moisture. Linen, cotton, and bamboo are excellent examples. These fabrics not only feel great on the skin during hot summer days but are also sustainable and eco-friendly. This way, you not only feel good but also do something good for the planet.

Airy Outfits: Freedom and Comfort

What we all crave during high summer is comfort. We choose clothing that is loose-fitting and allows air to flow, such as loose T-shirts, tank tops, short shorts, and crop tops. These outfits ensure that you feel free and comfortable without compromising on style.

Conclusion: Comfort is King

In high summer, comfort takes the lead. This time of year is all about simple, basic pieces that you can hardly go wrong with. The excuse “I wear this because it’s comfortable” is completely justified during these hot days. Comfortable clothing is not only practical but can also be stylish. So enjoy high summer in your airy, comfortable, and fashionable outfits!

Enjoy the sun, the warmth, and especially the freedom to wear what feels best for you. Because in high summer, it’s all about combining comfort and style.

Until next time, stay stylish!

Summer Accessories to Complete Your Outfit 2024

Introduction: I am a fan of accessories—not with every look, but with many. That doesn’t mean you need to have a lot; I prefer unique pieces and jewellery. Less is more, as they say. So, for summer 2024, here’s a quick rundown of the must-haves.

1. Hats: I’m a fan of hats all year round, especially the cowboy hat/look and the bucket hat. Fortunately, both are in style this summer. Hats often vary in material and design from spring/summer to the rest of the year, giving you plenty of options.

2. Sunglasses: Think of the collaboration between Odette Lunette and Rock Werchter this year. A good pair of sunglasses that offers real protection is crucial, but it’s equally important that they complete your look. For the perfect sunglasses, it’s best to visit an optician who can help find the right shape for your face and provide advice based on your taste and preferences.

3. Woven Beach Bags: This summer, woven beach bags are trending. Choose one that’s spacious enough to fit all your essentials. They naturally have a very summery look and are perfect for any beach outing.

4. Scarves: Scarves are incredibly versatile. You can weave them into your hair, wear them around your wrist or neck, or even tie them to your bag as an accessory.

5. Flip-Flops: Flip-flops are making a strong comeback this summer, available in various styles, from rounded to square tips. However, be cautious as they are not the healthiest option for everyday wear.

6. Statement Pieces: As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, I am a huge fan of statement pieces. Large jewelry and long necklaces that stand out are fantastic. Just don’t overdo it—mix and match. Adapt your accessories to your hairstyle. For example, if your hair is up, you might go for long earrings, or perhaps something with even more shape.

7. Belts: Thick, wide belts are in vogue. They can dramatically change your look. Wear one with a dress one day and without the next to create different looks. Belts also help accentuate your waist.

Conclusion: There is a significant difference between just wearing something and styling something. By adding or removing details or accessories, you create a look and express your personality. Clothing and jewellery are more than just items to wear. So go ahead, have fun and…

until next time, stay stylish!

Trends for Summer 2024

Summer has been underway for a few weeks now, even though we haven’t felt much of it in terms of temperature. Nonetheless, I’d like to talk about the most prevalent trends. The spring collection naturally ties in with summer, but what I didn’t mention then, I’ll share now.

1. Metallic

I am personally a huge fan of metallic, especially in pants. These are gorgeous when paired with a simple T-shirt, top, or body. It gives your outfit an immediate futuristic and striking look.

2. High Waist Pants

I’m also not sad to see these make a comeback. They are comfortable and can hide areas we’re a bit more insecure about. They also elongate our figure, especially when we go for a ton sur ton look.

3. Minimalist Outfits

Completely understated yet chic. For some, this might seem like a boring or cold outfit, but worn the right way, you exude class. Think of a long, light coat over a suit pants with a shirt or blouse. Nothing too special, but still elegant.

4. Short Shorts

Quite different from being too small. These can also be very stylish when paired with long knee-high nylons and a cute pair of pumps.

5. The Polo

I immediately think of Ralph Lauren. In my mind, I create a look with a long oversized polo, an oversized blazer on top, and cute flip-flops underneath. And there you have it, sometimes it’s that simple. You could even add a short pair of shorts underneath.

6. Sculptural Volume

This has something of an art piece, leaning more towards high fashion than everyday wear. Think of balloon sleeves, for example.

7. Cut-Outs

And I don’t mean a rip in the pants, but rather an opening in the back, stomach, or a bare shoulder. Showing some skin is in.

8. Midi/Maxi Dresses

Long dresses are also completely back in style. With the right fabric, they can be surprisingly refreshing. Think of a lace dress, for example.

9. Accessories

For accessories, wicker handbags and silk scarves in your hair, around your neck, or on your wrist are all the rage.

Conclusion

I almost forgot the summer colors: yellow and, surprisingly, black. At a catwalk event, the presentation mentioned that this might be because the whole world is somewhat in mourning. But white is still there too, a sign of hope.

Until next time, stay stylish!

Styling for the 2024 Festival Season

Introduction

Festival season is just around the corner, and while I won’t be attending this year, I love keeping up with the latest trends. So, this year, I’ve done some research again and I’m excited to share the most talked-about trends with you. Whether you’re planning to party at Tomorrowland or chill at Pukkelpop, these styles will help you look stylish and trendy.

1. Denim

Denim from head to toe is back in style, reminiscent of the iconic looks of the Beckhams. A nice pair of wide-leg jeans paired with a denim top is all the rage. Personally, I would complete the look with statement accessories.

2. Mixing Prints

This year, we’re seeing a lot of prints, both on top and bottom. The bermuda is making a comeback and it also features prints. And let’s not forget the tie-dye phenomenon! For those who need a reminder, tie-dye involves bright colors dyed in patterns. You can create this at home for a unique look.

3. Neon

The brighter, the better! Neon colors are making a strong return and are always fun for an eye-catching manicure. Plus, practically speaking, it helps your friends find you in the crowd.

4. Bold Accents

Go for outfits with standout details like big belts, cowboy boots with buckles, and fringe on your clothing. Something that catches the eye, like Beyoncé’s Texas Hold’em style, is very in.

5. Glitter

Glitter is popular every year, but this year it’s even more pronounced. Opt for full glitter outfits instead of just glitter details or makeup. Dare to shine!

6. Leopard Print

Leopard print remains perpetually popular. This trend keeps coming back and can be styled in various ways. Perfect for those who love a wild touch.

7. Bohemian Crochet

For the bohemian look, we’re seeing a lot of crochet items this year, such as pants, dresses, and tops. This style is perfect for a relaxed and summery festival look.

8. Bucket Hat

With hopefully lots of sunshine this summer, the bucket hat is a must-have accessory. Protect yourself from the sun while staying stylish.

Conclusion

Trends often repeat themselves, but sometimes just a bit more or a bit less. A combination is always possible too. I haven’t listed all the trends here, so you can still be creative yourself. Enjoy the festival season.

Until next time, stay stylish!
